Ottawa's Free Carpenter Matching Service

We help Ottawa homeowners find local carpenters, understand what goes into a carpentry quote, and know what the City and the Ontario Building Code ask for before a wall comes out or a stair goes in.

About Ottawa Carpenters

Carpentry looks simple until the rules come up. The City of Ottawa lists "adding or removing walls" as building permit work, and its list does not split load-bearing walls from partition walls. A beam that replaces a load-bearing wall is designed by a qualified, registered designer (BCIN), an engineer or an architect, or by you for a house you own. Inside a house, the Ontario Building Code sets stair risers between 125 mm and 200 mm and treads (run) between 255 mm and 355 mm, and asks for a guard at least 900 mm high where the drop is more than 600 mm. These are the questions that come up when a quote lands on the kitchen table.

Some of the answers surprise people. Replacing a door in the same size opening is on the City's exempt list. Enlarging or relocating a door is on its permit list. Trim, built-ins and interior stairs are on neither City list, so the answer is to ask the City. In Ontario, General Carpenter is a non-compulsory trade, so carpenters do not appear on the Skilled Trades Ontario Public Register, and we found no City of Ottawa carpenter licence. On a designated heritage building or one in a Heritage District Overlay, the City's permit exemptions do not apply. None of that is explained on a quote, so we explain it here.

Ottawa Carpenters is a matching service, not a carpentry company. We do not design, frame, build or repair anything and we do not employ carpenters. You tell us about your job, and we send your request to local carpenters listed in the Ottawa Construction Network directory. They reply to you by email. We do not screen or verify them, and we say so, which is why every page tells you what to check yourself.

How It Works

1

Tell Us About the Job

Choose the job type and add what you have in mind: which room, the wall, stair, doors or trim involved, roughly when the house was built, or a quote you want to compare. No phone number needed.

2

Local Contractors Reply by Email

We send your request to local carpenters in the Ottawa Construction Network directory. They contact you by email to arrange a look at the job and a written quote.

3

Compare Before You Sign

Compare quotes line by line: who designs any beam, who applies for the permit, temporary support, materials, labour, patching and finishing, and disposal. In an older home, ask how old paint and plaster will be tested before anything is disturbed.

Why Use Our Service

Carpentry Only

This site covers one trade. Your request goes to carpenters for wall removal and beams, interior stairs, handrails and guards, interior doors and frames, trim, built-ins and framing repair. Decks, basements, additions, windows and exterior doors, flooring, kitchens and bathrooms each have their own Ottawa site.

Honest About Prices

We give a price range only where at least two independent published sources agree. For Ottawa carpentry there are too few published prices, so we say so instead of inventing one. The one hard number is the City's permit fee: $12.75 per $1,000 of construction value, minimum $117 (fee schedule dated January 1, 2026).

Your Rights in Ontario

We explain the protections that matter when you hire here: a written direct agreement over $50, the 10-day cancellation right on a direct agreement, the 10% limit over an estimate, the Construction Act holdback, and when a WSIB clearance applies.

Carpentry IQ

Our free knowledge base answers Ottawa carpentry questions: when a wall needs a permit, who may design a beam, stair, handrail and guard heights in the Building Code, where joists and studs may be notched or drilled, and how to compare quotes.
