Interior Doors & Frames
Interior door slabs, pre-hung doors, jambs and casing, plus new or widened openings, with the City's same-size exemption explained.
Too few published Ottawa prices to quote a range. Compare quotes on the same count of doors, slab or pre-hung, jamb and casing, hardware, and any change to the opening. Where the job needs a building permit, the City's fee for alterations is $12.75 per $1,000 of construction value, minimum $117 (fee schedule dated January 1, 2026).

Interior door work runs from swapping a slab on its old hinges to new pre-hung units with jambs and casing, to cutting a new opening. The permit question turns on the opening. ottawa.ca's list of projects not requiring a building permit includes "Replacing doors or windows (provided they are in the same size opening)". "Enlarging or relocating a window or door" is on the permit list.
When an opening is widened in a load-bearing wall, the Building Code calls for a lintel designed to carry the loads above to the studs beside it, and the studs at each side are doubled for a lintel up to 3 m long. In a wall that carries no load, the opening is framed with material the same width as the studs, nailed to the studs beside it.
The Code sets minimum door sizes inside a house in Table 9.5.5.1.: 610 × 1 980 mm for a bathroom or a walk-in closet, 810 × 1 980 mm for a utility room or a door to stairs leading to a finished floor, and 760 × 1 980 mm for rooms not listed. A door that opens onto a drop of more than 600 mm needs a guard or a device that limits the opening to 100 mm.
On a designated heritage building or in a Heritage District Overlay, the City's permit exemptions do not apply, so even a same-size door swap starts with a call to the City.
Exterior and entry doors are covered on ottawawindowinstall.ca.
