Do baseboard heaters get in the way of new baseboard trim in Ottawa?
Baseboard heaters do get in the way, and how a carpenter handles the conflict is worth sorting out before work starts.
The core issue is clearance: ask what clearance the heater needs before a trim profile is chosen. The heater sits against the wall on its own bracket, which means the baseboard profile behind or beside it has to be interrupted, returned or reduced in height to clear the unit. If the heater runs along most of a wall, the trim may only appear at the corners and short sections between units.
A few things shape what the carpenter actually does. The height of the heater matters: a taller unit may require a lower-profile baseboard, or a separate piece of trim that steps down around it. The heater's position relative to corners and door casings affects how the returns are cut and finished. Taking an electric heater off the wall and reconnecting it is electrical work, outside a carpenter's scope; if an electrician does that first, the baseboard can run continuously behind it. If the heater stays, the carpenter works around it with returns and coped or mitred cuts at each end.
Thermostats and wiring that run along the baseboard wall add another variable. The carpenter needs to know where conduit or surface wiring sits before any nailing or fastening happens, so ask the carpenter to walk the room with you before cutting starts.
Trim is on neither of the City of Ottawa's permit lists, and we found no Ontario Building Code (O. Reg. 163/24) rule for baseboard profiles. On the trim itself, the carpenter should specify the profile, the material and the thickness in writing, because a thicker or taller profile that looked right in the showroom may not clear the heater's front face. Ask for a sample or a mock-up at one heater location before the full room is done.
When you put two written quotes side by side, check that each one spells out the same scope (which rooms, which walls, whether heater removal and reinstallation is included), states who supplies and specifies the materials, covers patching of any wall damage behind old trim, and includes clean-up. A quote that leaves any of those items vague is harder to compare fairly than one that names each step.
