Why Our Carpentry Cost Pages Have No Ranges

Reviewed 2026-10-01

Why there are no price ranges

A range appears on this site only where at least two independent published sources agree on an Ottawa figure. For carpentry we found none.

The Ottawa wall-removal pages we read disagreed even on the design fee, and two of them printed the same figures word for word, so they counted as one. The baseboard and interior door prices came from outside Ottawa. The only Ottawa page with stair and built-in prices was dated later than the day we read it, so it was left out.

Government sources publish what carpenters earn, which is a wage, not what a contractor charges, so we did not use it as a price.

The one hard number

The City of Ottawa publishes its building permit fee for alterations as a formula. It is the only figure on these pages, and the job pages that need a permit let you work it out from your own valuation.

How to read a step

Each step on a job page is one thing a quote pays for, in the order the work happens. "What it is" names the work. "On the bill because" says why it costs anything. "Ask for it itemized" is the line to look for on a written quote, so two quotes can be compared step by step. Where a rule applies, the clause or source is printed under the step.

Steps marked older homes, only if chosen or only if the opening changes apply to some jobs and not others. A trim job has no design or permit step; a wall removal has both.

Where the rules come from

Building Code clauses are quoted from the 2024 Ontario Building Code (O. Reg. 163/24) as published in the January 16, 2025 compendium. A later amendment may change a clause, so check the current Code before relying on one.

Permit lists and the fee schedule are quoted from ottawa.ca; old-paint and asbestos advice from Health Canada; contract rules from the Consumer Protection Act, 2002 and the Construction Act; heritage rules from the Ontario Heritage Act.

What we left out

No prices, no beam or lintel spans and no method for temporary support: spans depend on loads, species and the floors above, and supports are planned by the designer and carpenter. We are a matching service, not a carpentry company, and we do not screen or verify carpenters.
